U
ltra-warm wool has become cool for the
Twitter generation. Forget the prickly
monstrosities you find mothballed in granny’s
cupboard, new era knitwear really rocks.
As Cara Delevingne stepped off the runway
in a cuddly creation, she posted: “Knitting is
the BOMB.” Her runway appearance in the
stunning Burberry Prorsum Womenswear
Collection (right) was certainly explosive.
The queen of the catwalk has led fashionistas
to break out the winter woollies and wrap
themselves in finely woven fabrics, patterned
knits and chunky scarves – anything, as long
as it has a serious snuggle factor.
Tommy Hilfiger has taken inspiration from the
trend for his collection (above), saying: “We
updated traditional hiking and outdoor gear
for modern city life…using traditional plaids
developed in collaboration with iconic British
wool mill Abraham Moon. It works well from
a chalet in Aspen to the streets of New York.”
For brave souls who want to jump onto
the romantic home-knit bandwagon, the
Kari-Helene designed Niobe jumper in
100% pure alpaca wool, is available through
purlalpacadesigns.com.
Signals that wool is back in vogue can be
seen in sheep farmers’ toothy grins. Sales
have jumped 70% to £300million in just six
years.
