4. best view: Blue lounge,
zermatt
DJs and live bands are a feature of Zermatt’s
Blue Lounge, whose drinkers are served with
one of the best views in the world absolutely
free of charge. There is no better place to
admire the Matterhorn than a comfy chair,
with a beer in hand.
The bar’s proximity to the cable car means it
is also a perfect meeting place for non-skiers.
So those who don’t fancy a day on the slopes
can join you for a post-piste drink.
But the Blue Lounge’s unmissable event is its
Moonlit Ski evening. A three-course dinner
is followed by a descent under the stars
into Zermatt. Guests are escorted by Piste
Patrollers in case they are a little wobbly on
their skis.

5. best for cabaret: la
folie douce, val d’isère
Folie Douce is French for “soft party”, we’re
told, although a night on the tiles at this on-
the-mountain hotspot is anything but. And the
parties are likely to get even harder this year.
An all-new VIP area will put an end to fresh
dumps of snow spoiling the fun. The 100
square metres building will be encased in
glass with heated floors and great views
from the upper level.
On busy evenings, the orange ski run back to
town can become a treacherous mogul field,
not helped by the few too many you may
have enjoyed at La Folie Douce. For those
who don’t feel up to it, the funicular is close
to hand...and probably a safer option for
getting you back to your hotel.
